Russia to Pay Off in Cash USD 14.5 M Debt to Bulgaria

Business | January 23, 2004, Friday

Bulgaria's Finance Minister Milen Velchev and Russia's Deputy Premier and Finance Minister Aleksey Kudrin agreed that Russia should pay off in cash USD 14.5 M of its debt to Bulgaria.

The two officials as well as Bulgaria's Economy Minister Lidia Shuleva met in Davos, Switzerland, where the World Economic Forum is taking place.

It was previously decided that Russia will pay USD 24 M of its debt to the Balkan country through purveyance for the Bulgarian army and a total of USD 14.5 M through different goods.

The two finance ministers agreed that it will be very difficult to find goods that will meet the requirements of the countries and decided to launch discussions for their future cash pay-off.

In March 2003 Russia transferred USD 32,2 M from its debt to Bulgaria.

Russia and Bulgaria's stands on the Iraq debt issue were also discussed at the meeting in Davos. The two delegations reached consensus on that topic. They stated that the interests of the countries creditors to Iraq should also be reviewed.

Tourism was also on the agenda of the meeting. Shuleva and Kudrin agreed to boost future bilateral cooperation in that field. Kudrin also told Bulgaria's Economy minister that the Balkan country enjoys increasing interest from the Russian tourists.

What is the most important conclusion from the Sofia Mayor elections on November 15, 2009?
That the ruling party GERB of PM Borisov continues to be hugely popular, whereas the Socialists are pretty much out.

That the decline of the Socialist Party has stopped whereas the ruling party GERB has failed to attract the expected very high number of voters.

That the Sofia residents are either completely disillusioned with politics, or care little about who is Mayor.

That the record-high jackpot of the Bulgarian State Lottery "Toto" generated much greater interest than the Mayor elections.
