Bulgaria bid farewell to literary classic Yordan Radichkov who passed away on January 21 at 74 after a long illness.

Hundreds paid respect to Radichkov at the ceremony in Sofia. He was buried in the artists' alley at Sofia Central Cemetery with a funeral stripped of state honors as requested by his family - his son, wife and daughter.

Radichkov was one of Bulgaria's most prolific writers, known for his subtle parodies of the human nature and the communist regime, his mixture of what is real and what is magic. Many of his books have been translated into Russian, English, French, Spanish, German, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Finnish and other languages.

He has been on the staff of the newspapers Narodna Mladezh, Vecherni Novini, Literatouren Front. His first short stories were published in 1957, while his first book, the collection of short stories The Heart Beats for the People appeared two years later.

He has more than twenty-five books of prose to his credit - short stories, novellas and novels including: Simple Hands (1961), The Inverted Sky (1962); The Multicoloured Rug (1964), Hot Noon (1965); Fierce Mood (1965); Aquarius (1967); The Coat's Beard (1967), We, Sparrows (1968) A Gunpowder Primer (1969); A Small Motherland (1974j; All and None (1975); Memories of Horses (1975), The Sling, (1977); Si~q Small Matryoshkas and One Large (1977), A Northern Sagd (1980); The Tender Spiral (1984); Scandinavia (1985), Noah's Ark (1988).

Yordan Radichkov has also written the plays January, Lazaritsa, The Basket, An Attempt to Fly which enjoy great popularity in Bulgaria and abroad. There are several films based on his screenplays.

In November last year Yordan Radichkov was awarded the state honor Paisii Hilendarski for 2003. The award was presented to Radichkov by the country's Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg. The award was given to Radichkov for his contribution to Bulgaria's culture and literature.

Radichkov was often seen as a possible nominee for a Nobel Prize.
