Sofia Insists on EU Entry Before Closing N-Units 3, 4

Politics | December 20, 2003, Saturday // 00:00

Bulgaria's common position on closing units 3, 4 of its only nuclear power plant should be based upon the condition for entering the European Union (EU) before shutting down the reactors, the country's President Georgi Parvanov said Saturday.

Earlier on the same day, Parvanov received Sofia-based Darik radio's award for Best Politician 2003.

Bulgaria has agreed to close the two 440-megawatt reactors by the end of 2006 under pressure from the EU. Many experts and politicians, however, are still opposing the decision, insisting that it would prompt an economic crisis in the country.
