IAEA Launches Check on Bulgaria's Only N-Plant

Politics | December 9, 2003, Tuesday // 00:00

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will make a routine check on Bulgaria's only nuclear plant in the town of Kozloduy on Tuesday.

This will be the fourteenth check on the plant in 2003 carried out by IAEA. The inspection aims at reviewing the execution of the tasks Bulgaria has under the 1970 singed agreement on the non distribution of nuclear arms.

Bulgaria has to allow access and cooperation to the IAEA experts for control over the nuclear material. Each country has to report on nuclear material it uses.

IAEA's year-2002 investigation into the safety of units 3 and 4 at Bulgaria's Kozloduy nuke revealed sizeable progress since 1991, when the IAEA first undertook a safety review of the units. Not yet published, the report shows the operational and design safety at Kozloduy now corresponds to the level of improvements seen at other plants of a similar age.
