EU Energy Negotiation Chapter Reopening "No Problem" for Bulgaria

Politics | December 6, 2003, Saturday // 00:00

The reopening the Energy chapter in the negotiations with the European Union (EU) is not a technical problem, but doing it Bulgaria should have in mind the terms of such reopening and also when it will be closed again, Meglena Kuneva, Bulgaria's Euro-integration Minister said Saturday for local Radio Net.

Kuneva added that Austria, Ireland, Greece and France seem to be determined to see Bulgaria execute its commitment under the memorandum of 1998 for early closure of units 3 and 4 of the country's only nuclear power plant in the town of Kozloduy.

She also said that in her opinion the EU peer review on the Kozloduy n-plant gives a chance to the nuke, but the report that will be prepared will reveal whether the nuclear experts were convinced in the safety of the units.

In November experts of the European Commission executed the planned peer review on units 3 and 4 of the nuclear power plant in Kozloduy. Antonio Madonna, head of the special EU mission to Bulgaria said that all EU recommendations concerning the safety of n-plant have been met. Madonna also added that units 3 and 4 are safe.

The closure of the two oldest units at the end of last year came after many years of concern over their safety, strong pressure from the European Union, protests from the nuclear lobby and opposition parties that the reactors are economically necessary.
