Bulgaria's Nuke Units 5,6 Landed 6-Year License

Politics | October 9, 2003, Thursday // 00:00

Bulgaria's Agency for Nuclear Regulation issued Thursday a six-year exploitation license for units 5 and 6 of the country's only nuclear power plant in the town of Kozloduy, the Bulgarian National Radio reported.

Over the last two years there has been some controversy about whether those reactors were safe enough to continue their work. Pressure from the European Union (EU) even made the country agree on closing the plant's oldest units 3, 4 by 2006.

However, Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov has insisted that the country had serious reasons to demand extending of this deadline. Many experts have also suggested that closing the two 440-megawatt reactors would drastically reduce the plant's energy-producing capacity and lead to an economic crisis.

Bulgaria is set to start building its second N-plant in the town of Belene 2004.
