Bulgaria officially launched Tuesday the first online administrative services that are part of the country's currently built e-government system.

From now on Bulgaria's people will be able to change their residence registration, make a check-up in Bulgarian firms' files or receive information about their personal insurance instalments via the Internet, Bulgaria's State Administration Minister Dimitar Kalchev said Tuesday. Special BGN 125 smart cards with personal electronic signatures will be used for identifying different users of the system.

The move is seen as the first step for Bulgaria toward fulfilling its national strategy for building efficient e-government system. Adopting that strategy was also motivated by the European Union (EU) standards for quick and efficient state administration system.

A total of 20 online administrative services -- including firms and vehicles registration -- will be available in Bulgaria by the end of 2005.
