Poland's Troops Come under Mortar Fire Near Bulgarian Unit

Politics | August 26, 2003, Tuesday // 00:00

A Polish logistical base has come under mortar fire on Monday in the southern Iraqi town of Karbala, where the Bulgarian contingent has also been stationed. No injuries or damages have been reported.

Poland's media broke the news on Tuesday, citing AFP reports. The attack has not been officially confirmed.

Poland News Agency PAP specifies that following the mortar attack Poland's peacekeepers pulled out of the base to their hide-aways and were replaced by US soldiers.

A day earlier an explosive went off in front of a Bulgarian patrol car and broke its wind screen. No one was injured in the accident.

Poland will officially take over the command of the zone south of Baghdad on September 3. A total of 9200 troops will be deployed under Polish command, including the Bulgarian 450-strong contingent there.
