Bulgaria Welcomes Spain's King Juan Carlos

Politics | June 8, 2003, Sunday

Spain's King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia arrived in Sofia June 8 at the invitation of President Parvanov. At the airport they were welcomed by Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg and his wife. This is the second visit of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia after they came to Bulgaria in May 1993.

Bulgaria prepared hecticly for the visit of Spanish King Juan Carlos and his wife, with the streets of Bulgaria's capital Sofia and the second biggest town in the country Plovdiv cleaned up.

Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia are to visit Plovdiv on the second day of their visit to Bulgaria, where they will meet Plovdiv's Mayor Ivan Chomakov and his wife. While in Plovdiv the royal family will visit the Old town.

The royalties are scheduled to meet President Parvanov and his wife Zorka Parvanova June 9.

Bulgaria's Prime Minister will host a special lunch for the Spanish royal family at Vranya Residence.

Meeting with Bulgaria's Parliamentary Speaker Ognyan Gerdzhikov and a visit to Sofia's University hospital Lozenets are also on the agenda of the Spanish guests.

Later in the day Bulgaria's president will organize an official dinner for King Juan Carlos and his wife Queen Sofia.

The Spanish royalties will open a joint Bulgarian-Spanish economic forum June 10.

Spanish Queen Sofia and Zorka Parvanova will attend the ceremony for the donation by the Spanish agency for foreign cooperation and National organization of the blind people in Spain to the Bulgaria's Union of the blind people.

Later in the evening the Spanish royal family will organize a reception for Bulgaria's President.

What is the most important conclusion from the Sofia Mayor elections on November 15, 2009?
That the ruling party GERB of PM Borisov continues to be hugely popular, whereas the Socialists are pretty much out.

That the decline of the Socialist Party has stopped whereas the ruling party GERB has failed to attract the expected very high number of voters.

That the Sofia residents are either completely disillusioned with politics, or care little about who is Mayor.

That the record-high jackpot of the Bulgarian State Lottery "Toto" generated much greater interest than the Mayor elections.
