Ruling Majority Set to Continue Bulgartabac Privatisation

Ruling party Simeon II National Movement and its junior coalition partner, the predominantly ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) declared in Parliament firm political will to continue the privatisation of Bulgartabac Holding and attract a strategic investor to develop the Bulgarian economy.

The declaration, read by deputy chairman of the parliamentary group of Simeon II National Movement Stanimir Ilchev, also called on the Cabinet to open immediately a new procedure to guarantee the national interests and the sector development.

The Cabinet and the ruling majority must be supported and not attacked for protecting the national interests and the principles of clear, transparent and efficient privatisation, the declaration reads.

According to it these are the principles that prevent Bulgartabac sale "at any cost".

The declaration came after right-wing opposition United Democratic Forces called in Parliament for the dismissal of Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Vassilev over the failure of Bulgartabac privatisation.

UDF leader Madezhda Mihaylova once again blamed Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg and leader of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms Ahmed Dogan for nixing the deal.

A day earlier the Cabinet backed the decision of the parliamentary groups of the ruling coalition that the privatisation procedure for Bulgaria's tobacco monopoly be terminated and Bulgartabac is not sold under the existing circumstances.
