Bulgaria "Threatens" France on U.S. Wine Market

Business | February 17, 2003, Monday

France may be in danger of losing its prominence on the US wine market to Bulgarian competitors after seventeen US lawmakers urged boycott on all French goods and wines.

The senators have reportedly initiated a subscription list as well.

The moves comes in the wake of France's refusal to back US position for a military strike against Iraq.

According to local media reports Bulgaria's diplomatic mission in Washington, as well as the trade attaches have been instructed to cooperate for increasing Bulgarian wines market share in the United States.

Bulgarian wine producers have long been known for their high quality and their production is well marketed all over the world, Bulgarian Foreign Minister Solomon Passy commented while in the village of Lozen during the holiday of the vine-growers Saint Trifon. He refused to confirm or deny the possibility of Bulgarian wines threatening France's products on the US market.

Foreign experts expressed doubts over the success of the lawmakers' initiative.

France ranks ninth among US trade partners. French imports to the United States in 2001 accounted for USD 30,4 B of the trade between the two countries, which exceeded USD 50 B.

U.S. lawmakers, angry over France's and Germany's opposition to the administration's Iraq policies, are considering retaliatory gestures such as trade sanctions against the French and pressing for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Germany, the Washington Post wrote February 12.
