No Clear Info on U.S. Aircraft at Bulgaria's Sarafovo Yet

Politics | February 16, 2003, Sunday

Information, provided by Defence Minister Svinarov, says that there is one U.S. plane has already landed at Sarafovo airport, some 250 miles east of Sofia, projected as a military base in a possible strike on Iraq.

This was announced by governmental speaker Dimitar Tsonev in an interview for local Darik Radio. He underlined that he got acquainted with the data during a conversation with the defence minister.

Burgas airport coordination center did not confirm the information, saying there has been no request so far by American aircraft.

The planes have been granted permission to land at the base as early as February 11, Tsonev specified. A total of 18 planes will be allowed to land at Sarafovo, following the request of Washington to Sofia.

A U.S. plane has landed at Bulgaria's Burgas (Sarafovo) Airport, Bulgaria's Defense Minister Svinarov announced February 11 said when attending the lecture of U.S. Ambassador James Pardew in Sofia. Fifteen US officials arrived at the military quarters near the Burgas Airport February 11. The news wasn't confirmed by Burgas airport authorities.

In a separate development it was announced that two Bulgarian planes AH-12 are stationed at Burgas airport. They transport packed food and military tents for the expected American contingent, to be accommodated in the Sarafovo quarters.

The planes are owned by private airlines Air Sofia and Air Vega.

It is still not clear to which Iraq's neighbor Bulgaria's the nuclear, chemical and biological defense unit will be dispatched in case of war, Tsonev said.
