One of the "heavyweight" parties of the Reformist Bloc alliance, the junior partner in Bulgaria's coalition government, has said it will pull out of governance if the bloc's candidate fails to gather enough votes in the presidential elections.
Meglena Kuneva, the head of the Bulgaria of Citizens Movement (DBG), has said in a statement any result "such as 160 000 for example" would be "substantially weaker" than the 291 806 votes the bloc garnered in the 2014 parliamentary elections or the 200 000 in received in the local vote last year.
Traycho Traykov, a former economy minister, is running as the bloc's nominee in the vote whose first round will be on November 06.
A move to withdraw support from the governing axis would endanger the minority coalition of Bulgaria, which hinges on the narrow support of the Patriotic Front, a nationalist coalition, to secure a parliamentary majority.
ABV, a left-wing party, was the first coalition partner to quit the cabinet late in the spring.
The news comes after tensions between the Reformist Bloc and GERB, the senior partner in the government headed by Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, with Borisov setting an ultimatum on the bloc to stop behaving as if it were in opposition.
On Sunday BZNS, another RB party led by Defense Minister Nikolay Nenchev, said the bloc should call for early elections in the spring of next year if "all other options" to define relations with GERB were exhausted.
