The death toll in a devastating earthquake that rocked central Italy this week has increased to 267 as of Friday, the authorities have said.

A total of 215 people had been extracted alive from the rubble as of Thursday.

There are almost 400 injured people receiving treatment in hospitals, according to the Civil Protection department.

At least eight foreign nationals – from Britain, Spain, Romania, and Canada – were among the dead, newswires have reported citing local officials.

More than 900 aftershocks have been registered since the first quake struck in the early hours of Wednesday. The strongest aftershock this morning struck at about 6.30am (0430 GMT). It had a magnitude of 4.7, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

No survivors had been found overnight and rescuers continued their search on Friday, sifting  through rubble for a third day.
