UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova has denied speculation that she intended to run for President of Bulgaria in the forthcoming elections.

Bokova, Bulgaria’s nomination for United Nations Secretary-General, said that her efforts were focused on winning the top UN position.

The campaign was progressing well, Bokova told public radio broadcaster BNR at a ceremony at the University of Economics in the city of Varna where she was awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa on Saturday.

Her comments came in response to allegations about her potential nomination for President from GERB party, the dominant partner in the minority coalition government led by Boyko Borisov.

GERB were considering Bokova’s nomination for President, a member of Parliament from the Reformist Bloc (RB), the junior partner in the coalition government, told reporters on Friday soon after incumbent head of state Rosen Plevneliev said that he would not run for a second term in presidential elections expected in the autumn. The MP, Grozdan Karadzhov, attributed the information to an unnamed RB member.

GERB were quick to dismiss the allegation, with the leader of the party’s faction in Parliament, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, saying that Bokova had never been considered as presidential candidate by GERB.
