An official ceremony is due at the Sofia Central Station to mark the end of a two-year renovation process, the Transport Ministry says.

A BGN 56 M project was aimed improving comfort, energy efficiency and accessibility. Part of the energy used by the station will come from solar panels that will also provide hot water. Elevators will help move through up and down the building, and for the first time escalators will take passengers to the platforms.

Improvements have also been added in terms of technology, with a single center managing trains to or from Sofia installed in the station.

Since its reopening on September 06, 1974 (after the previous building had been razed to the ground), Sofia Central Station had never undergone any major repair before the current one began in 2014.
