Bulgaria: Bulgaria's Border Police Reports No Heightened Migrant Pressure

There is no heightened migrant pressure on Bulgarian borders, with the number of refugees passing through the country's borders comparable to the figures from last year.

This was announced by Antonio Angelov, director of border police, in an interview for the Bulgarian National Television (BNT) on Tuesday.

Angelov noted the tense situation at the border between Greece and Macedonia where thousands of migrants have been stranded for several weeks, not being allowed to continue their onward journey along the Western Balkan route.

The director of border police assured that Bulgarian authorities are closely monitoring the latest developments on the Greek-Macedonian border.

According to him, the police, gendarmerie and army have committed enough personnel to guarding the country's borders, with officers being well prepared.

Until the end of January, 180 new people were appointed as border guards, with another 150 undergoing training.

Angelov assured that the integrated system for surveillance has been turned on and all problems will be fixed by the end of the month.
