In an open letter addressed to state institutions, foreign investors called on Bulgarian authorities to carry out an effective reform of the judiciary.
The letter was signed by ten commercial chambers representing countries which are among the leading trade partners of Bulgaria and have made more than EUR 20 B direct investments in the country in the past two decades, namely the USA, Belgium, the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Luxembourg.
A copy of the letter was sent to Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, Parliament Speaker Tsetska Tsacheva, President Rosen Plevneliev, Deputy Prime Ministers Rumyana Bachvarova, Tomislav Donchev, Meglena Kuneva, Ivaylo Kalfin and Justice Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva.
They expressed concern over the latest developments concerning the long-awaited reform of the judiciary and the increasing impression that there is a deficiency of the rule of law in the country.
This resulted in lack of confidence among investors, which led to the withdrawal of investments from the country, daily Dnevnik informs.
The foreign investors believe that there are professionals in the judicial system capable of carrying out the reform, but there is also need for political will to implement it.
