Sofia City Court (SGS) acquitted the former deputy speaker of the Bulgarian parliament, Hristo Biserov, of all three charges brought against him on Tuesday.

Biserov was charged with tax evasion, undeclared currency deals and undeclared bank accounts held in Switzerland, but was found innocent.

The prosecutor's office demanded on Monday four-year imprisonment for Biserov, while Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov requested BGN 18 965 from him in unpaid taxes.

The court recommended to the prosecution to gather more evidence as the materials collected so far were not sufficient for convicting Biserov.

The prosecution was firm that it will appeal the acquittal, relying on the Swiss side to provide more information on the bank accounts of Biserov.

As on previous occasions, the former deputy parliamentary speaker from the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) refrained from answering to questions of the media.

The defence pleaded that there was no evidence proving that the bank accounts belonged to Biserov himself.
