The seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate in the 28 member states of the European Union decreased to 9.6% in May compared with 10.3% a year earlier, Eurostat said on Tuesday.
“This is the lowest rate recorded in the EU28 since July 2011,” the EU statistical office said in a news release.
Bulgaria’s unemployment rate was 9.7% in May 2015, close to the EU28 level and down from 11.5% in the same month of last year.
Among the member states, the lowest unemployment rate in May was recorded in Germany (4.7%), and the highest in Greece (25.6% in March 2015, the latest month for which data is available) and Spain (22.5%).
The eurozone seasonally-adjusted jobless rate dropped to 11.1% in May, down from 11.6% in the same month last year. This was the lowest unemployment rate recorded in the eurozone since March 2012.
Eurostat estimated that 23.35 million men and women in the EU28, of whom 17.73 million in the eurozone, were unemployed in May. Compared with the same month of last year, unemployment fell by 1.58 million in the EU28 and by 939,000 in the eurozone.
Compared with April 2015, the number of people unemployed decreased by 38,000 in the EU28 and by 35,000 in the 19 member states of the eurozone.
