''The words of your Prime Minister that there is no real attempt to fight corruption in Romania while the arrests of high level politicians are merely related to conflicting political affiliations, are a bad sign,'' stated Monica Macovei, former Romanian Justice Minister and current MEP from the European People's Party. ''These words merely mean that Boiko Borisov has no intention of leading a real war on corruption. Politicians need to be investigated.''
She arrived in Sofia Monday morning to take part in a discussion on anti-corruption policies.
''There are threats and what not, but there need to be people with firm positions - both prosecutors and judges,'' Macovei answered after being asked a question on the dangers that such policies could pose.
She added that politicians have been investigated regardless of their political affiliations, including people close to governing figures.
''Do you have a politician in Bulgaria who is willing to do something about this? They asked me if I would agree to become a Justice Minister in Bulgaria, and I said ''Yes'', but nobody came looking for me. Nobody wants to fight corruption practices, because politicians will become the victims.''
