Britain’s Labour Party will be supporting the proposed referendum on the country’s EU membership. The statement was made by party leader Harriet Herman and foreign affairs spokesperson Hilary Benn.

"The Labour Party does not want to see the UK stumble inadvertently towards EU exit," Harman and Benn stated in an interview for the Sunday Times. "We have more power by being in the EU than we could ever hope to have by acting alone."

The information was released mere weeks after the Labor Party suffered an excruciating loss in Britain’s local elections. Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron’s conservatives managed to secure a majority in Parliament with 331 out of all 650 seats in the House of Commons.

Meanwhile, David Cameron and President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker are expected to hold talks Monday. The main topic will be the proposed referendum and the projected changes that Great Britain foresees for the EU.

In a YouGov poll taken by the Sunday times, 1,532 citizens of the island were asked on their opinion as to whether Britain should stay in the union. The major portion (44%) responded that they should remain in the zone, and 36% were in favor of an exit.
