Bulgaria: Miner Dies, Another Injured After Rocks Collapse Near Bulgaria's Balchik File photo

A miner died, while another was injured on Tuesday after rocks collapsed in a manganese-extracting mine in the Bulgarian village of Tsarkva, near the town of Balchik.

The first man died on the spot after being hit by a falling rock even though he was wearing a helmet, daily Dnevnik reports.

His colleague was taken to the hospital in the city of Dobrich and was discharged after an examination.

Crews arrived to the site of the incident to ensure the safety in the area, while an inspection is forthcoming.

The manganese mine near the villages of Tsarkva and Obrochishte is the largest in Europe and the fourth largest in the world.

Previously, no heavy incidents have taken place and there were plans for expansion of the extraction through the creation of a new mine.
