Alternative for Bulgarian Revival (ABV), one of the parties supporting the coalition government, approved the resignation of its leader, former Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov.

This was announced by Parvanov himself, following a three-hour meeting of the national council of the party on Friday.

The former President reaffirmed his resignation as leader of ABV and the party approved it, daily Dnevnik quotes him as saying.

Parvanov added that a voting will take place at the national council on April 25, at which a new leader will be proposed.

The former President will remain leader in resignation until April 25 and a conference of ABV has been scheduled for the following day.

Three topics will be discussed at the conference – the party's future development, assessment of the governance results and activities for ABV's participation at the forthcoming local elections.

Parvanov announced that he is to resign his party's leadership after the parliamentary group of ABV approved the issue of the new BGN 16 B debt, despite his opposition.

He explained that direct democracy is the leading factor in the leadership of ABV, adding that there will be direct election of new chairman and the proposal of nominations was forthcoming.

Parvanov criticised the relationship between ABV and the main ruling party GERB, which was eroding the idea for stable governance.

He expressed positive attitude towards the former Interior Minister Veselin Vuchkov, who resigned on Wednesday.

According to him, both the resignation of Vuchkov and the approval of the new debt were not coordinated with the parliamentary groups supporting the coalition government.
