Bulgaria: 4000 Workers Go on Strike in one of Bulgaria's Biggest Plants

Workers have started an effective strike in one of the biggest factories in the Yambol vicinity and in the country - Yazaki Bulgaria.

No term has been specified as to when the protest will end.

The reasons behind the strike are violations of the labor code that have been established by the Labor Inspectiorate, attempts for the protest actions to be stopped, as well as lack of effective results after a series of negotiations with the employer.

Bulgarian syndicate KT Podkrepa further stated that the demands of the workers in the factory also include a 50% increase in salaries, implementation of ''effectiveness bonus'', based on outstanding results, removal of discriminatory practices, including not paying bonuses if three sick leave days are taken by the employee, implementation of supplementary payments for three-shift work days, as well as providing the necessary conditions for syndical activities.

Recently, InvestBulgaria Agency awarded Yazaki for its contribution to human capital development in the region earlier in February.

''The threats of the employer that they might close down the production sites as well as the mass paid publications in local press can barely compare to the heavy exploitation of workers - physically and emotionally,'' Podkrepa representatives stated. ''The proof of that is the fact that over the past 8 years since its existence, over 8,000 people have resigned from Yazaki.''

Meanwhile, since the beginning of the strike, the employer has implemented a lockout on several machines, thus violating the code of conduct in resolving labor disputes.
