The Sofia Appellate Court has upheld the 4-year prison term of former Bulgarian Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov over the blocked wiretapping motions.

In May 2014, Tsvetanov was declared guilty by the Sofia City Court, the court of first instance on the case, on charges of failing to fulfill his official duties and blocking the use of special surveillance equipment against Orlin Todorov, former head of the GDBOP (Chief Directorate Combating Organized Crime) unit in Veliko Tarnovo, and two other people, thereby obstructing an investigation against them.

Tsvetanov was sentenced to 4 years of imprisonment and was banned from holding public office for a period of 5 years by the Sofia City Court.

The three-judge panel of the Sofia Appellate Court upheld the ruling of the Sofia City Court on Monday.

Through his inaction and the failure to fulfill his official duties, Tsvetanov exercised unlawful control over the activities of the investigative authorities, according to the Sofia Appellate Court.

The ruling of the Sofia Appellate Court is not final and can be appealed or protested within 15 days before the Supreme Court of Cassation (VKS).
