Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov assured on Friday that there will be no shale gas extraction in the country until a new eco-friendly method is invented.
His statement was made at the annual forum of the American Chamber of Commerce in Bulgaria.
Bulgarian PM however, welcomed a possible public debate. In his words Bulgaria has rich gas resources, which if used could reduce fuel prices. He stated that the greatest opposition to shale gas acquisition at the moment is expressed by the country's current suppliers.
"I sincerely hope that our friends, neighbours and partners from Turkey and Greece won't take advantage of the wish to see Bulgaria punished,'' Borisov said.
He mentioned that the US has experienced a 5% economic growth after the shale gas extraction through fracking started.
Borisov explained that in the case of Bulgaria a moratorium was imposed, because of a ''massive campaign'' on the possible environmental consequences.
Several protests were held in the country against fracking and the most recent one took place in Sofia in September 2014.
Borisov said that at the moment the government has decided to take into consideration public fears on the matter.
