LUNAR Festival 2024: Illuminating Sofia's Nightscape Once Again
Sofia's Lunar Festival of Lights is back, illuminating the city with more than 20 captivating light installations across its most iconic landmarks.
President Rosen Plevneliev has spoken to a multitude of heads of state and other high-profile politicians attending an international forum marking the 70th Holocaust Remembrance Day.
The event, titled "Let My People Live!", commemorates the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1945.
Plevenliev told counterparts from around the world that marking the Holocaust Remembrance Day was sending a message of unity to all peoples in the world and the "every leader" has the responsibility of not allowing such a tragedy in the future.
He placed an emphasis on Bulgaria's move to save nearly 50 000 Jews from deportation during World War Two, regretting the country failed to do so for Jews in Northern Greece and parts of Yugoslavia (administered by Sofia for some time during the war) since they weren't Bulgarian citizens.
In his words, "it is better to be facing an economic crisis than a moral catastrophe, we'd better have economic problems than to bear an historic shame". With these words Plevneliev quoted Israeli President (2007-2014) Shimon Peres, who made this comment in 2013 at an exhibition marking seventy years from the saving of Bulgarian Jews that was set up in Brussels.
Bulgaria's head of state also reminded that Sofia was an instance of religious peace and tolerance, with a synagogue, a mosque and two churches (one Orthodox and one Catholic) placed in the heart of the capital.
