There is no direct terror threat to Bulgaria even though the risk exists, State Agency for National Security (DANS) Chair Vladimir Pisanchev said on Thursday.

Pisanchev attended a hearing in Parliament to provide more details about the special operation carried out earlier this week in four Bulgarian cities against the propagation of radical Islam.

Prosecutors pressed charges against seven people, including the controversial imam Ahmed Musa Ahmed on the grounds of propagating war and anti-democratic ideology.

The hearing was held behind closed doors, and Pisanchev delivered a summary of what he had discussed with MPs at a press conference.

He said that the conflict in the Middle East involving Islamic State (IS) was a source of tension that grew every day.

"DANS cannot withstand the threat on its own, and neither can the other services. We need an analysis of the situation and a strategy," Pisanchev added.
