A total of BGN 7,93M was stolen in Bulgaria last year as a result of credit card frauds, namely skimming, according to data provided by financial analysts, cited by 24 Chasa Daily.

The number of bank cards in 2013 was 8,259,629, or an average of one card per person.

According to unofficial data, Bulgarians reportedly are among the top credit card data thieves. Of all the scams of this type in the world, 95 percent are committed by Bulgarians, experts say.

In 2012, some BGN 7.71M was stolen using skimming devices, and in 2008 – BGN 6.89M, darik news reports.

In Bulgaria, however, skimming fraud rates are lower than in Western Europe. In France, a total of BGN 900M was lost to credit card frauds in 2013 only. In the same year, Britain suffered substantial losses amounting to BGN 934M. Skimming frauds throughout Europe resulted in BGN 3B drained in 2013, darik news notes.
