Balkan telecommunications regulators are nearing a decision to cancel roaming charges for mobile communications, Macedonian news agency MIA reported on Thursday.

The proposal, launched about two months ago, has brought together regulators from Albania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia and Turkey.

Regulators believe they can take the decision for setting up a Balkan cost-free roaming zone by January 1, 2015. Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina will also be part of the zone.

“While we are waiting for the European Commission to adjust our roaming prices to the European ones,  as  Balkan regulators we have decided to agree – bilaterally and multilaterally – to cancel roaming charges for our customers to enable them to use mobile services while traveling in the Balkans,” MIA quoted the Director of Macedonia’s Agency for Electronic Communications, Robert Ordanoski, as saying.

Under the planned decision, roaming charges will be scrapped for all types of mobile services – voice, messaging and Internet.
