Honorary consuls of Bulgaria will be obliged to present reports on their activity to the Foreign Minister every four years.

The measure is part of a change to an ordinance on honorary consuls which has been approved by the government.

The amendment seeks to tighten control over the work of honorary consuls and monitor its efficiency.

In the case of a failure to present a report on time or a negative assessment of the activity of an honorary consul, the Foreign Minister will submit a proposal for their dismissal with the Council of Ministers.

The main duties of honorary consuls involve developing and encouraging bilateral economic, commercial, cultural and scientific relations between Bulgaria and the respective country.

Honorary consuls enjoy the privileges and immunities stipulated in the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.

The post of honorary consul of Bulgaria abroad can be occupied by a Bulgarian national or foreign national. No remuneration is attached to their duties.
