Bulgaria’s Parliament voted in favor of terminating Socialist leader Sergey Stanishev’s MP term, which would allow him to enter the European Parliament.

After 2 previous attempts which failed due to lack of quorum, Friday’s session convened with the necessary amount of deputies present. Without debates, they proceeded straight to the vote. A majority 171 MPs voted in favor of releasing Stanishev, 3 voted against, and 5 abstained.

Stanishev, who is also a leader of the Party of European Socialists (PES), will serve as a Bulgarian representative to the European Parliament starting July 1. Despite calls for his resignation as leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) following the disappointing results in May’s elections, Stanishev has clearly stated he will not give up his post.

Later on Friday, leaders of Bulgaria’s parliamentary parties will meet to discuss the political situation in the country and possibly agree on a date for early elections. After the last round of consultations, President Rosen Plevneliev revealed that they would take place between September 28 and October 12.
