80% of households in Bulgaria live on incomes below the monthly maintenance rate, according to an analysis of the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB).

According to CITUB calculations, the monthly maintenance per person stands at BGN 563 and a four-member household needs around BGN 2254 a month in Q1, 2014.

According to CITUB data for the first three months of 2014, every fifth household in Bulgaria lives in extreme poverty and fails to cover basic needs.

The poverty line in Bulgaria remains at slightly over BGN 213 per person, according to news.bg.

20% of households in Bulgaria are below the poverty line and the number of people living in extreme poverty stands at around 1.5 million.

However, the number of people living below the poverty line has dropped by around 216 000 on the year.

More than half of Bulgarian households live on a total income per household member of up to BGN 340.

At the same time, the number of Bulgarians who live on an income of up to BGN 563 has dropped by around 844 000.

According to CITUB, 80% of households in Bulgaria report an income per household member below the monthly maintenance rate.

In the first three months of 2014, the monthly maintenance in Bulgaria stands at BGN 563 and a household of two adults and two children needs at least BGN 2254 to cover food supplies and bills.

The monthly maintenance rate dropped slightly from the final months of 2013 and from the first three months of 2013.

Nikolay Nenkov from CITUB commented at a press conference on Thursday that the positive statistics in Bulgaria was mainly due to the lower electricity prices.

The other reasons behind the reduction in the monthly maintenance rate were said to be the decrease in prices of raw materials and cereals on a global scale and the low inflation rate in the EU.

Vili Ivanova from CITUB emphasized that the monthly maintenance rate had increased by around 26%, or BGN 115 per household member, in the period 2008 – 2013.
