Two tonnes of drugs have been confiscated in Bulgaria since the beginning of 2014, according to Interior Ministry Chief Secretary Svetlozar Lazarov.

Lazarov announced at a Thursday press conference that the authorities had seized 35kg of heroin bound for Western Europe at the Silistra border crossing on April 14.

In a joint operation of the Customs Agency, the Border Police Chief Directorate and the police directorate in Silistra, the authorities inspected a Razgrad-registered Mercedes van. The roof of the van was found to contain 56 packs of heroin bound for Western Europe.

In end-October 2013, the authorities discovered a Citroen which had burned down to the ground at a site for ferrous and non-ferrous scrap. The vehicle had had a transformer on it.

The vehicle had most likely been set ablaze on purpose.

The transformer was seized and lab tests showed that it had contained 70kg of cocaine earmarked for Bulgaria.

The owners of the vehicle were tracked down, questionings were held, and the persons associated with the matter were found to have ties to organized crime.

During Thursday's press conference, Lazarov suggested that the number of people who were capable of smuggling such a large amount of cocaine into the country was not very big.

He said that the cocaine had been burned in order to prevent the authorities from seizing it, adding that pre-trial proceedings against an unknown offender had been opened into the case.
