Estonia is worried by Russia's actions in Ukraine and favors increased military presence on its territory as a security measure.

The President of the Baltic country, Toomas Hendrik Ilves, told CNN that the unpredictability of Russia's actions means the region is in need of more security.

"We need more exercises. We think that the decision to increase the number of planes providing air policing in the region is a very good one", President Ilves commented.

The Estonian head of state believes Europe is in a situation that it has not been faced with since World War 2, where a nation is annexing territory from a neighbor. According to Ilves, the sanctions against Moscow are also having little effect.

"We are in new territory right now. The rules have been broken. So that makes it very difficult for us to actually be able to guess what is in one or another person's mind. I think the consequences of his (President Putin) actions will lead to a dramatic downturn that we already are beginning to see in the economy of Russia", the President added.

Estonia, a former Soviet republic with nearly 25% ethnic Russian population, joined NATO in 2004.
