Every fourth household in Slovenia is without electricity following the intense winter storms in the past days.

The heavy snow and ice have brought down electricity lines and trees, with the south-western areas being the hardest hit, the BBC reports.

The Slovenian government has requested emergency generators from Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic. In some areas, the armed forces have been called up to help restore power.

"We estimate that some 500 tonnes of steel, cables and electricity posts remain on the ground," said Defence Minister Roman Jakic.

Almost half the country's forests were said to have been damaged by ice.

Neighboring Croatia and Serbia have also been affected by the extreme weather, but not to the same degree.
