Major Human Trafficking Ring Busted in Bulgarian Town

A major human trafficking ring was broken up in the Bulgarian town of Blagoevgrad, announced the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Interior in Blagoevgrad.

The operation involved officers from the Regional Police Directorate of Blagoevgrad and Regional Directorate Border Police - Kyustendil, under the lead of National Police Chief Directorate, Bulgarian Focus News informed.

A minivan carrying 17 Afghan citizens was pulled off near Bulgarian town of Sandanski on February 1, said the head of the Blagoevgrad Police Directorate Georgi Kostov.

Some of the detainees had refugee status, one of them was a minor.

The trespassers were escorted by two Bulgarian citizens, one of whom was the organizer of the human trafficking.

The Afghan citizens were supposed to enter Macedonia via Bulgaria. The foreign citizens were housed in a refugee camp in the capital city of Sofia.
