Bulgarian border police at the Vidin-Danube Bridge-2 border crossing point detained seven Syrian nationals hidden in a truck.

The 27-year-old driver of the vehicle was also arrested, according to the press office of the Interior Ministry.

At 5.30 am on Tuesday, a Mercedes freight vehicle approached the Vidin-Danube Bridge-2 border crossing point.

Upon inspecting the vehicle, border police officers found five women and two men aged 18-32 hidden in a secret compartment.

They lacked identification documents but said they were Syrian nationals.

Five of them had been sent invitations by Bulgaria's State Agency for Refugees.

Pre-trial proceedings have been opened into the case.
