Bulgaria: DPS Nominates Elena Yoncheva for MEP
The Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) in Blagoevgrad has nominated Elena Yoncheva as a candidate for the European Parliament, sparking intense debate and speculation
There is currently a 4% margin between the two major parties in Bulgaria, BSP and GERB, according to the latest poll.
The poll was conducted by the Afis agency and cited by the Bulgarian Pressa (Press) daily.
If parliamentary elections were to be held now, 22% would vote for the ruling, left-wing Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP and 18% - for the formerly-ruling, opposition and centrist Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party, GERB.
GERB has lost 1% support since the agency's last study in September.
According to Afis, 5% would vote for the liberal, predominantly ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms, DPS, 5% will go to the recently-founded right-wing Reformist Bloc, and 3% - to the populist movement "Bulgaria without Censorship of controversial former TV journalist Nikolay Barekov.
"This result dims future prospects for GERB to return to the level from February - about 30% support. This 10-12% was lost in two steps - after the sudden resignation of its leader Boyko Borisov as Prime Minister in February, and after the early general elections in May," said sociologist Chavdar Naydenov from Afis.
The poll has been conducted between December 4 and 8.
