Anti-government protesters have toppled a monument of Lenin in central Kiev.

The demonstrators reportedly pulled down and decapitated the statue of the Russian revolutionary leader on Shevchenko Blvd.

The protesters chanted "Freedom will come and bring order," around the fallen monument, as a group of young people threw gas bombs, according to the UNIAN news agency.

Police headed to the site.

Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of people are protesting in Kiev's Independence Square against the decision of President Viktor Yanukovich and his government to back out of a strategic deal with the EU and seek closer ties with Russia.
