EU Council President Herman van Rompuy stated that Ukrainians' "deep European aspirations" are clear and that the EU was ready to respond to them.

Rompuy's statement followed German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle's comment that the EU's doors remain still open for Ukraine.

Westerwelle traveled to Kiev for a meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. The German Foreign Minister met with representatives of the pro-European opposition, before heading to Kiev's Independence Square, where thousands of Ukrainians continued to protest against the authorities' refusal to sign the EU Agreement. Westerwelle insisted that he was there as a "European, meeting other Europeans."

Van Rompuy in his turn encouraged Ukraine to follow through with signing the key political and trade deal.

"The European Union stands ready to respond to the deep European aspirations of the people of Ukraine, very present and visible these days," Van Rompuy told at a press conference in Rome.

"The Association Agreement, including the deep and comprehensive free-trade area, offers a future for an independent and modern Ukraine.", Rompuy added.

Van Rompuy criticized the excessive use of police force on the protests in Kiev during the weekend.

"I call on all sides to show restraint and respect civil rights and liberties. Excessive use of force by the police is unacceptable," Rompuy stressed.

Earlier, EU Council President Herman Van Rompuy described relations between Ukraine and the European Union as "really close, however addeding that the two parties need to overcome pressure from abroad prior to signing the association agreement.

In conformity with "The Law of Ukraine on National Referendum" (№ 226 of November 28, 2012), "National Referendum on people’s initiative shall be declared by Ukrainian President, if it is initiated in compliance with the Constitution and laws of Ukraine". In practice, this means that President DECLARES [and no other option for him] Referendum if the activists of the above "people’s initiative" submit not less than 3mln signatures, but-THE MAIN- not less than 100,000 signatures from EACH region of Ukraine. And who will allow those activists to collect not 100,000 but poor 100 signatures in the "pro-EU" regions....unless the EU/USA "blessing"?.............
Fresh example: "We stand with the people of Ukraine who see their future in EUROPE"(US Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland at OSCE meeting in Kiev, December,5). So, what on earth Referendum when Master knows already the Ukrainian people' choice!?.........Poor Ukraine, poor its leaders-hosts of the meeting, they have to stand this overseas bi*ch' insolent loutishness. Democracy, You say?

"Referendum, Sirs. But You won't allow it to happen, right? "

Last time I checked the only people who could authorise a referendum are the Ukrainian President or Prime Minister. Stop your daily propaganda/disinformation and idiocy.

The Ukrainian authorities would never allow a referendum because they would invariably lose, that would only lead to more protests/instability and that would make Putin unhappy......and puppets don't like their master to be upset :(

....again and again...all the same...yesterday it was: "We continue to support the aspirations of the Ukrainian people to achieve a prosperous European democracy", today it is:"EU Welcomes Ukraine's 'Deep European Aspirations".........The only true democracy under these skies in action......And what about not Yours, but the Ukrainian people' Real Aspirations, Sirs? Practically ALL recent polls in Ukraine show that populous is 50/50 divided. So, not Your (highly estemeed, sure ;-) DESIRE, but the real Will/Aspirations of the entire Ukrainian people is the MAIN. Referendum, Sirs. But You won't allow it to happen, right? The early election are far better for YOU and, consequently, for Ukrainian people, right?.........
