The Deputy and Interim Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Sofia, Catherine Barber assured that there will be no special measures against Bulgarian citizens in the UK.
“There will be no special measures against Bulgarians. PM David Cameron’s proposed measures will apply equally to all EU citizens. All labor restrictions for Bulgarians and Romanians will be lifted in January”, stated Barber for NovaTV.
Earlier this week, David Cameron announced a set of measures which will be aimed at cracking down on the so-called “benefit tourism”, citing fears over mass immigration from Bulgaria and Romania.
The new policies could include the ineligibility of new migrants to receive out-of-work benefits for the first 3 months, as well as stopping their social benefits after 6 months if they do not have a “genuine” chance of landing a job.
Catherine Barber admitted that the UK government does not have an exact prediction of how many Bulgarian and Romanian citizens will move to Britain once the labor restrictions are lifted.
She believes that the proposed measures should be viewed as “precautionary”, since most Bulgarians who move to the UK have the will and intent to find employment.
