Georgia’s Foreign Minister sees the partnership with Bulgaria as important for her country’s EU and NATO integration.

Maia Panjikidze visited Sofia and met with her Bulgarian counterpart Kristian Vigenin. The two ministers agreed that the relationship between the countries is solid, and it will be strengthened even further in the future.

“We congratulate Georgia for its substantial economic development over the past several years, as well as in its efforts to enhance democracy”, stated Kristian Vigenin.

Panjikidze pointed out Georgia’s recent presidential elections as a big test to the country’s democratic values. They had shown that 80% of the Georgian people support European integration.

Both diplomats addressed the failed EU Association Agreement with Ukraine. Vigenin stressed the need for the EU to give an even clearer perspective and incentives to its potential new member states.

The Georgian minister expressed her disappointment with Ukraine’s decision, but noted that her country respects any sovereign decision.

The Agreement for a deeper and more comprehensive free trade zone on the continent will stimulate trade and investment between Bulgaria and Georgia, believes Vigenin.

The two countries vowed to continue their close partnership in the framework of Bulgaria’s rotational Chairmanship of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization, in the first half of 2014.

“For a long time, we viewed the Black Sea as a border, which divides us. Now we are building a new understanding of it, as something which binds us together”, concluded Vigenin.
