Bulgaria: DPS Nominates Elena Yoncheva for MEP
The Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) in Blagoevgrad has nominated Elena Yoncheva as a candidate for the European Parliament, sparking intense debate and speculation
The parliamentary group of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) is to submit a final draft of the new Election Code next week, according to BSP MP Maya Manolova.
Manolova chaired the ad-hoc committee tasked with drafting the new Election Code.
Manolova, as cited by dnevnik.bg, explained that the socialist MPs had identified shortcomings in the draft and had changed the methodology for calculating election results, the rules for the work of polling agencies in polling stations, etc.
She refused to disclose any further details.
The ad-hoc committee wrapped up work on the draft a month ago and the document was given to parliamentary groups to make changes.
Apart from BSP, the liberal Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) party, coalition partner of BSP, vowed to submit a draft Election Code of their own, but they did not specify a date.
On Thursday, software company Scytec presented a system for electronic voting in Parliament.
Manolova explained that the company had asked to make a presentation after seeing the Election Code project drafted by the ad-hoc committee stipulating machine voting.
She also assured that if the new Election Code introduced machine voting, the contractor would be selected through a public procurement procedure and the final decision would be made by the Central Electoral Commission or the Council of Ministers.
