The marches of members of fan clubs of Sofia's top football teams "Levski" and CSKA were held in the Bulgarian capital without any significant incidents, despite earlier fears for the opposite.
"Levski's" fans gathered near their club on "Todor Alexandrov" boulevard and marched to the National "Vasil Levski" Stadium where the eternal derby with CSKA starts at 3 pm.
The CSKA fans traditionally gathered near the lake Ariana in the central Borisova Gradina park, which is not far from the Eagles' Bridge intersection, where the 50 000 to 70 000-strong rally of the left-wing Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) in support of the government, was held.
There were fears that because of the close location and close timing, tensions and clashes might flare, but they did not materialize.
There was huge riot police presence in Sofia, cordoning off streets, and redirecting the routes of different groups, which prevented violence. The only minor incidents involved football fans throwing firecrackers.
Meanwhile, the march in support of the government has reached its final destination – the Council of Ministers on "Independence Square," and is about to disperse.
The rally of the opposition, formerly ruling, center-right Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party, GERB, in the second largest city of Plovdiv, has also ended.
Meanwhile, university students protesting against the government kept their promise to remain inside the Sofia University main campus, which they have occupied with demands for the resignation of the government, and to not stage any rallies in order to prevent provocations.
