Bulgaria is seriously lagging behind in the implementation of employment targets by 2020, according to a special report of Eurostat.
The report keeps track of the indicators for monitoring the implementation of the EU's Europe 2020 strategy.
According to the EU target, 75% of the EU population aged 20-64 should be employed by 2020.
Bulgaria's target is slightly more ambitious – an employment rate of 76% by 2020, according to investor.bg.
By end-2012, Bulgaria's employment rate was 63%.
According to the report, Bulgaria will not face implementation challenges only with the share of renewable energy in gross final energy consumption.
By 2020, the share of renewables in gross final energy consumption is to reach 16% and by end-2011 it already stood at around 14%.
Bulgaria is among the EU countries with the lowest share of people employed in knowledge-intensive sectors.
In EU countries, the share of people employed in knowledge-intensive sectors grew to 35.5% by 2011 from 34.1% in 2008. Romania, Bulgaria and Poland had the lowest shares in the EU, at 20,5%, 26,1% and 28,6%, respectively, while Luxembourg, Ireland and Sweden were at the top of the ranking with shares of 56,2%, 3,1% and 43%, respectively.
