At least 5 people have died and 38 have been injured in Beijing's Tiananmen Square, when a car crashed and caught fire.

Three of those killed were inside the car, and another two were bystanders, reports the BBC. A woman tourist from the Philippines is among the casualties.

The incident took place at the north end of the square, near the entrance to the Forbidden City. The jeep crashed into a guardrail, also injuring several policemen.

The square was quickly evacuated and the injured were taken to hospital.
