Bulgaria: Austria Calls for EU Refugee Quotas Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann

The Federal Chancellor of Austria, Werner Faymann, suggests the EU should establish a quota system for receiving refugees.

Speaking in Brussels, where he is attending a high level EU conference, Faymann said EU member states should share the burden of the increasing refugee flow.

“If each country agrees to receive a certain number of refugees, this could ease the severity of the problem”, stated Faymann.

Austria is preparing to assist Italy with financial help for dealing with the high number of refugees entering from its Mediterranean Coast.

Recently, the UN refugee agency UNHCR agreed a Syria Resettlement/Humanitarian Admission Programme with 17 countries willing to receive refugees. The relocation is expected to start in 2014.

Germany expressed its readiness to accommodate as many as 5 000 Syrian refugees. Among the recipient nations are also non-EU states, like the United States and Australia.
