The death toll from a from a powerful earthquake in southwestern Pakistan has reached 515, according to local officials.

Over 700 people have also been injured in the disaster, and more than 100,000 people have been left homeless.

International media report that insurgent attacks threaten relief efforts and survivors complain of lack of shelter from the scorching sun.

Rescue teams are still to reach several remote areas, including Awaran district near the earthquake’s epicentre.

Tuesday's earthquake of magnitude 7.7 struck Baluchistan, a huge earthquake-prone province of deserts and rugged mountains, and was felt across South Asia.

The quake destroyed houses and cut communications with the worst affected district of Awaran, and was so powerful it caused a small island to emerge from the Arabian Sea, just off the Pakistani coast.
